LANSING, Mich. – The bipartisan Michigan board of Democracy Defense Foundation (DDF) today called on news outlets, civic organizations and other community groups to host additional candidate debates and forums before early voting starts across Michigan in late September.
The DDF’s Michigan board members – former Govs. Jim Blanchard, a Democrat; John Engler, a Republican; former Lt. Gov. John Cherry, a Democrat; and former U.S. Congressman Mike Bishop, a Republican – released the following joint statement:
“Now more than ever, Michigan voters want to hear directly from the candidates on the issues that directly affect them, their families and their communities, and we should host as many debates and forums as possible before the start of early voting in late September. News outlets, civic organizations and community partners have an opportunity to come together and propose debates for candidates running for statewide office, Congressional seats or state legislative seats to answer questions and share their vision for Michigan. Debates between candidates running for public office are vital to helping voters understand the priorities of candidates and being confident in our democracy.”
Michiganders can begin voting in-person with an absentee ballot as early as Sep. 24. All registered voters in Michigan have the right to vote by mail using an absentee ballot delivered to their home. Voters can also request an absentee ballot directly from their local clerk’s office. Absentee ballots are available beginning 40 days prior to every election.
