LANSING, Mich. – Following reports that DOJ monitors would be sent to observe elections in Detroit, Lansing and East Lansing, Michigan’s bipartisan board of the Democracy Defense Foundation today called on the U.S. Department of Justice to cooperate with Michigan’s local, county and state election officials and for all parties to act in good faith.
The DDF’s four Michigan board members – former Govs. Jim Blanchard, a Democrat; John Engler, a Republican; former Lt. Gov. John Cherry, a Democrat; and former U.S. Congressman Mike Bishop, a Republican – released the following statement:
“Michigan elections are secure, transparent and accurate, and we encourage monitors from the Department of Justice to exercise impartiality, fairness and sound judgement so voters in Michigan can cast their ballots with confidence and without fear. We encourage the Department of Justice to respect Michigan’s local, county and state election officials, who have a history of administering open, fair and accurate elections, and for all sides to cooperate in good faith. We urge everyone to respect all local, county and state laws and regulations so we preserve voters’ confidence in our proven election process, and everyone can vote without fear, intimidation and undue political influence.”
