WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the Democracy Defense Foundation released a statement condemning the remarks by Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, who said of the midterm elections, “It’s 50-50. We’re right on the edge of winning. Two things could have us lose. One, they steal the election…”
“When a Senate leader says the other party may ‘steal the election,’ he is sowing distrust before a single vote is counted,” said Democracy Defense Foundation Senior Advisor Margaret Hoover. “You cannot defend democracy by teaching voters to distrust elections. Leaders in both parties should reject stolen-election rhetoric and commit to accepting lawful results.”
“‘They steal the election’ is corrosive whether it comes from the right or the left,” Hoover continued. “Election integrity cannot become something we believe in only when our side wins. Senator Schumer should reject this rhetoric and commit to accepting the lawful results in November.”
